3 Things to Consider Before Replacing a Tub

A bathtub can be a great component of any bathroom. Whether you’re replacing an old one or installing a new tub, there are certain factors you need to consider.

1. Bathroom & Tub Size

You need to make sure your bathroom has enough space to fit a standard-size tub. A standard tub will be 60 inches long, 30 to 32 inches wide and 14 to 20 inches deep.

2. Tub Type

  • Alcove tubs – An alcove bathtub replacement is a smart choice if you don’t have a lot of space in your bathroom or you want a tub-shower combination. Its compact size means it can fit within a three-wall enclosure. It also happens to be the most popular tub type on the market, thanks to its compact size, cost-effectiveness and ease of installation.
  • Freestanding tubs – Keep in mind that in addition to the floor space occupied by a freestanding tub, there should be an extra three inches of space around the ends of the tub, and four inches between its side and the wall. That’s why freestanding tubs are usually only installed in large bathrooms. If you have enough space in your bathroom, a freestanding tub is an excellent addition that can be used as a design focal point.
  • Corner bathtubs – Contractors recommend corner bathtubs if you enjoy taking nice long soaks. That’s because standard corner tubs have a depth of 20 inches, which is usually big enough for two to three people.

3. Tub Material

  • Fiberglass – Fiberglass tubs are the most affordable option on the market but not necessarily the most cost-effective. That’s because fiberglass is prone to cracks and scratches.
  • Acrylic – Acrylic is a more durable alternative to fiberglass but can be prone to staining and discoloration.
  • Marble – Luxurious marble tubs are more expensive but thanks to their classic appeal and wide-ranging versatility, they’re often worth the extra cost.
