4 Countertop Recommendations for a Low-Maintenance Kitchen

Choosing a kitchen countertop is one of the most important parts of the kitchen renovation process. Since practically all kitchen tasks are done on the countertop, this feature is one of the most difficult to clean and maintain. To reduce your kitchen’s maintenance needs, we recommend choosing a low-maintenance countertop.

When picking a countertop material, it’s highly recommended that you choose one with a nonporous surface. Nonporous surfaces are easier to clean and sanitize because fluids—and, by extension, bacteria—can’t permeate the surface. Here’s an overview of the pros and cons of the most popular low-maintenance countertop materials.

1. Laminate

Laminate countertops are nonporous and resistant to water. Compared to other countertop materials, laminate is more affordable. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that laminate is the most cost-effective choice. That’s because laminate countertops aren’t as durable as quartz countertops, which cost more but last longer.

2. Solid Surface

Solid-surface countertops are a mid-range alternative to laminate countertops. Solid-surface is made of mineral dust mixed with plastic resins and pigments. Like laminate options, solid-surface counters have nonporous surfaces that are easy to clean. Designwise, solid-surface countertops have a more homogenous appearance than multi-layered laminate countertops.

Keep in mind that solid-surface countertops are not without their disadvantages. One is that solid-surface countertops are easily scratched, but scratches on the surface can be sanded down. There’s also the issue of heat resistance—solid-surface countertops can be deformed if hot pans (or anything above 250°F) are placed on them.

3. Recycled Glass

Recycled glass is manufactured by combining crushed glass with clear resin, the same used in manufacturing solid-surface countertops. If you’re looking for a low-maintenance, eco-friendly countertop with excellent heat resistance, recycled glass countertops are a great choice. In addition to their resistance to heat and stains, recycled glass countertops are also known for their aesthetic appeal. The smooth, nonporous surface can add a sophisticated elegance to any kitchen.

4. Stainless Steel

If you want your kitchen to have a more contemporary feel, a stainless steel countertop would arguably be a better choice. What are the other advantages of a stainless steel countertop? In addition to requiring minimal upkeep, they last for a long time, which helps maximize your ROI.
