Key Measurements to Consider When Designing a Home Office

If there’s one thing the ongoing “new normal” has taught us, it’s the fact that consistent productivity within a work-from-home environment is entirely possible. An efficient and comfortable home office should establish a healthy boundary between your work and home life. However, if you are planning a home office remodel, you might be wondering how big it should be.

It’s less about the total floor space than it is about making sure there’s ample room for your key work activities. Here are general measurements and clearances for the most important features and elements.

Freestanding Desk

A freestanding desk should have a minimum width ranging from 48 to 72 inches. Its depth should be between 24 to 36 inches, while its height is around 30 inches. A distance of at least 33 inches between the desk and the back wall or file cabinet is necessary for you to move around. A couple of chairs across the desk should meet the minimum clearance of at least 48 inches on the desk’s opposite side. You can never have enough work surface, though, so get the largest desk that fits comfortably in your space.

File Cabinets

File cabinets, particularly double-door ones, should have a minimum height of 30 inches, a width of 30 to 36 inches, and a depth of 15 to 16 inches. Some file cabinets have sliding panels, each of which can go up to 24 inches. Keep in mind the spacing between each shelf should be between 14 to 16 inches.

Built-In Shelves

Discuss with your home remodeling contractor whether built-in shelves can be included in your design plan. By incorporating these elements, you can maximize wall space and create a neater appearance for your home office. The shelves should have a depth ranging between 10 to 12 inches. They can also boost the storage for your home office and place office supplies, books and other items within easy reach.

Computer Peripherals

Unless you use a laptop, it is important to consider computer dimensions when designing your home office. Since they often vary in size, you want the area where you’ll place your computer to be as flexible as possible. Placing your keyboard on the desk is perfectly fine, but if the desk has a dedicated tray for it, it should be set at 24 to 26 inches from the floor to ensure ergonomic use. As a rule of thumb, there should be a gap of at least two inches between the thigh and tray when seated.
