5 Design Features of Accessible Bathrooms

An accessible bathroom is an inclusive space with design features that allow wheelchair users and individuals with mobility impairments and balance and grip issues to use the space as safely and independently as possible. The mobility remodeling experts from DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Wilmington recommend that certain key features be in place.

These include:

  1. An accessible door. An accessible doorway is designed to accommodate wheelchair users so they can easily roll in and out of the room without difficulty. It should be wider than the standard door width and no threshold should obstruct the entrance. A door made of lightweight material is also recommended. Finally, the door should open outwards so it can be opened easily in an emergency situation.
  2. Grab bars. Grab bars are a basic feature of an accessible bathroom. When installed on the wall closest to the toilet or tub, these items provide support, stability and balance for users transferring from a wheelchair. There should also be a grab bar on the wall behind the toilet for additional leverage.
  3.  A raised toilet seat. For an individual with reduced mobility, a raised toilet seat makes it easier to stand up and sit down, so make sure to consider it when taking on an accessible bathroom remodel.
  4. Easy-to-reach amenities. In an accessible bathroom, soap, towels and other toiletries must be within reach when seated in a wheelchair. This means placing or hanging things at a lower height than usual. Ideally, these items are placed close to the sink so that people who use wheelchairs or crutches will not have to touch their mobility devices with wet hands to dry them off. Additionally, the faucet should be a lever design so it does not require much force to use.
  5. Adequate space. To be considered accessible, there should be several inches of space on both sides of the toilet to allow a user to maneuver in a wheelchair. There also should be ample space within the bathroom to move around.
