How Does Feng Shui Factor Into Home Design?

Just recently, Chinese New Year was celebrated. If you’re currently planning for a remodel, perhaps Feng Shui has crossed your mind. Feng Shui is the popular ancient Chinese philosophy that focuses on achieving balance and harmony between the elements. These elements are wood, earth, metal, water and fire.

Feng Shui is also referred to as the art of placement. It provides a guide as to where the different elements must be positioned to optimize and improve the flow of Chi or energy. Feng Shui can be used by home renovations experts during the design process. If you also want to make your home Feng Shui-friendly, you can get started by learning the basics.

Define Your Home’s Energy Map

The Bagua, or Feng Shui energy map, defines the areas of the home and how they are connected to your life. Here’s what these areas mean and what aspects of life they affect.

  • North – Career

  • Northeast – Spiritual Growth

  • East – Health

  • Southeast – Money

  • South – Fame

  • Southwest – Love and Marriage

  • West – Creativity

  • Northwest – Helpful People

How the Elements Should Be Applied in Each Area of the Home

Now that you know the Bagua of your home, it’s time to put the elements to work.

  • Wood – Wood signifies growth and vitality. Make sure you have wood elements in the East and Southeast areas of the home.

  • Metal – Metal signifies logic and intelligence. Add metal elements in the West and Northwest portions of your home.

  • Earth – Earth signifies balance and stability. Items like rocks and crystals are good additions in the Northeast and Southwest areas of the home.

  • Water – Water signifies serenity and wisdom. Aquariums, mirrors and reflective surfaces may be added to the North side of your home.

  • Fire – Fire signifies passion and energy. You can use candles and red objects to accentuate the South area of your home.
