Ways to Keep Your Neighbors Happy During a Home Remodel

Major home improvements, such as kitchen remodeling or additions, can be loud and messy — not just for you, but for your neighbors too. Remember that being considerate of the people around you goes a long way. Use these tips from trusted remodeling contractors to ensure your neighbors stay happy during your project.

Let Your Neighbors Know in Advance

It’s polite to let your neighbors know about your upcoming remodel. Doing so will help you maintain a long-term positive relationship with them. Make sure you inform them of when the project will start and end, what types of equipment your contractors will use and if there will be road closures.

Keep Them Updated on Progress

It’s a good idea to update your neighbors a couple of times during the remodel. Let them know when a certain phase of the job will affect them. During your first visit, ask them how they would like to be updated. Do they want to be called, texted or emailed? Give your neighbors an update if there will be large deliveries, your crew will need to close a street or there is an especially disruptive task scheduled.

Address Any Issues Promptly

Good communication is key when it comes to successful home remodeling projects. Always listen to your neighbors’ concerns and do your best to accommodate their requests. If necessary, bring their concerns to your contractor’s attention to determine how to resolve the issue.

Two of the most common concerns during a remodel are noise and parking. Make sure that construction equipment or dumpsters are not blocking their driveways. Let your crew know where they can and can’t park. Also, don’t start any work before eight in the morning or after five in the afternoon unless necessary.
