Kitchen Renovation Tips: Living Out of a Temporary Kitchen

Home remodeling contractors will be the first to admit that not having access to a full kitchen during a remodel can be tough. However, if you plan and prepare properly, you can survive while waiting for your new kitchen to be completed.

Set Up a Temporary Kitchen

You’ll want to set up a temporary kitchen in a nearby location like your garage, basement or utility room, and preferably in a space with an existing sink. Before your remodeler throws them out, consider using your old cabinets in your temporary kitchen for storage and to give you some working space. (You can lay plywood atop old cabinets to create a work surface and use it as a spot for small appliances as well.)

Handy Storage Containers

Keep commonly used kitchen items in clear plastic storage containers, and keep them properly labeled to make it easier to find what you need. Box up stuff that you only occasionally use and store it in an out-of-the-way place.

Cook in Bulk

Make some big meals ahead of time and freeze them in smaller portions. Defrost single-meal portions and reheat them in the microwave.

Track Your Remodeling Progress

Setting up a bulletin board in your temporary kitchen can help you track home remodeling progress. Taking photographs of kitchen renovation progress can keep your spirits up, and having a checklist and a calendar can allow you to track each step as it happens. Seeing how close you are to your goal can be very satisfying.

Be Creative

While you’re at it, have some fun! Spread out a plastic tablecloth in your den or living room and have an instant indoor picnic. Or camp outdoors and cook your meals on a camping cook stove. Eating out can be expensive, but you can clip restaurant and take-out coupons before your remodel starts so you can plan smart and budget for dining out without eating into the remodeling budget.
