How a Designer Can Help With Kitchen Renovations

The kitchen is arguably one of the trickiest parts of your home to remodel. If you’re having trouble planning a kitchen remodel, it’s best to hire a professional kitchen designer. Here’s how a designer can help you design your dream kitchen!

Designing an Efficient Kitchen Layout

To maximize efficiency and improve time management in one of the busiest areas of your home, the kitchen layout shouldn’t interfere with the flow of movement. There are no hard-and-fast rules about the best way to organize your kitchen. However, contractors usually use one of two design principles when planning a kitchen layout: the kitchen triangle and kitchen work zones.

Kitchen Triangles vs. Work Zones

In a kitchen that incorporates the kitchen triangle concept, the refrigerator, range and sink (the most frequently used areas in your kitchen) are about 4 to 9 feet apart in a roughly equilateral triangle. Placing the three most frequently used areas near each other reduces unnecessary steps, optimizes workflow efficiency and saves time when cooking.

The concept of the kitchen triangle was created in the 1940s. At the time, the kitchen was generally used by just one person for cooking and preparing meals. However, kitchens have since evolved into multifunctional spaces that can also be used as informal dining areas. That’s why the concept of kitchen work zones was developed. In a kitchen that incorporates the concept of work zones, areas have a specific function, like food storage (the refrigerator and pantry), food prep (appliances and the cooktop), cleaning and waste disposal (the sink and the garbage bin) and cutlery storage.

Which is the best design concept to incorporate into your kitchen design? It depends on your needs and preferences. Before making a recommendation, a home renovator will need to take these factors into account.

Features That Can Boost Your Kitchen’s Functionality & Value

An efficient layout, sufficient storage space, low-maintenance countertops and enhanced lighting are common features that can be found in a well-designed kitchen. However, if you want to increase your home’s value before putting it on the market, a kitchen remodeler can recommend a few features that can enhance your home’s appeal to prospective buyers. For instance, a kitchen island might catch the eyes of those with a family. Alternatively, it can serve as a casual dining area for family and friends who often visit.
