St. Louis Park - Remodeling Case Studies

From Screen Porch to Yoga Room

Project Name
From Screen Porch to Yoga Room
Project Summary
Our clients had a screen porch attached to the back of their home, and the primary purpose of our remodel was to make this space more functional for them. The wife, a yoga instructor, conducted classes remotely from the basement, and needed a brighter, more uplifting space from which to to lead these classes. We rebuilt, enlarged, and refinished the former porch so it now is a muli-functional room, serving as a technology-enhanced yoga room that is light, inviting and professional, and also as a comfortable informal family room/TV room.

Why DreamMaker
We were recommended to this couple by a colleague, and were eventually hired by them because they appreciated our design-remodel system which enabled us to handle every part of the project for them, from design to procurement to production.                                           Here are photos of the house before we started the remodel, and a shot of the pilings:     dining room before porch before   view to porch before porch before  pilings
How does the remodel enhance the client's life
This house is part of a development that was built over a swamp, and since we planned to rebuild the old screen porch, enlarging it and refinishing the new room as a part of the house, we were required by code to erect pilings 30 to 35 feet deep to meet the required support levels. The room size increased from 12.5 x 10 feet to 16.5 x 15 feet, and a vaulted ceiling also increases the volume of space. A new large opening connects the room to the existing dining and living areas, and we matched the existing wood flooring to enhance visual flow as well. New venting picture windows bring maximum views and natural light into the room. Opening evenly on all four sides for passive air exchange through hidden screens, the unique windows, together with a new ceiling fan, add comfort and gentle air flow to the entire main level. We installed a mini-split unit for temperature control, but our clients didn’t need to use their air conditioner all summer! With the light and views and air flow, they feel as if they are almost outdoors. The new yoga studio, moved up from the basement, is now a professional space from which to teach remote students with an enlightening, impactful experience via the relocated large screen TV.  And when not in use as a studio, the room becomes a casual, comfortable family/TV room.  A new larger deck provides a nook for the outdoor grill and the desired convenient access to a new stone patio, all for easy outdoor entertaining.
Customer Testimonials
The couple marvels at the change the new space has made in their lives. Working through challenges on this project took some extra time but they felt the benefits were well worth the wait. They appreciate the quality of materials and workmanship on the project as well.
