Many-Angled Kitchen

Project Name
Many-Angled Kitchen
Project Summary
Our clients’ 20th floor condo unit boasted magnificent views of a city lake and abundant natural light through large windows. But the light didn’t reach into the kitchen area, and the existing dark and heavy traditional cherry cabinets didn’t help. The existing countertops were higher than standard and too tall for our less-than-five-foot client (she joked that they came up to her chin!) and the different counter levels cut up the counter space, limiting productivity. Our solution for this kitchen remodel combines reworked, refaced, and new cabinets with salvaged and new fixtures and materials to result in a simply elegant light-filled space custom designed to our client.
Project Story
The existing kitchen layout sported many angles and differing shapes that generally worked well for our client, and condo restrictions and budget limitations prohibited us from changing it in a major way, so we worked within it. The existing beautiful herringbone wood flooring was in good shape and retained.  The base cabinets were cut down to lower them and refaced with lightly glazed white shallow shaker doors. New base cabinets ordered in the same material and at the same height were installed at the radius corner down to the bar. All wall cabinets are new, as are the new storage cabinets at the expanded second sit-up counter. The existing traditional panel and column system cladding the back of the half wall to the dining room (which houses electrical) was remade in wood panels in a simpler style and stained to match the existing built-in hutch. New quartzite stone countertops and stacked stone backsplashes were installed. The copper bar sink and faucet were reused. The heavy leather-look wallpaper above the bar was swapped out with a lighter, softer style, and the bar shelves replaced with new brackets and glass. And lastly, we cut the three counter stools down to accommodate the new lower radius counter. HERE ARE BEFORE AND AFTER PHOTOS OF THE PROJECT:
