Why Lighting Is Important When Aging in Place

When it comes to a home remodel for aging in place, lighting is one of the top priorities. As we grow older, we all can develop eye issues including but not limited to sensitivity to light, reduced visual acuity and color discrimination, and even vision loss. In fact, approximately one person in three will develop a vision condition by the time they hit 65.

For those thinking about staying in their home as long as possible, upgrading lighting around the home is not just a luxury but a necessity.

Ways To Improve Lighting for Aging Eyes

It is not enough to simply install brighter lights throughout your house. If you really want to be safer, you need to have a talk with your home renovation company so that your vision needs are addressed. To create more light, consider adding windows so that you can brighten up your rooms while benefiting from the health-boosting properties of the sun. Filtered natural light is best as it is bright, glare-free and will also reduce the need for artificial lighting. If adding or replacing windows isn’t in your budget, you can opt for overhead lighting fixtures and install higher lumen bulbs.

Aging eyes also have a decreased ability to adjust to sudden light changes. To combat this, try to keep lighting levels consistent in all of your rooms to avoid straining your eyes. As an added safety precaution, increase lighting in areas that don’t receive a lot of natural light, such as staircases and hallways.

Another thing to remember when upgrading the lights around your home is that the quantity of light should not be sacrificed for the quality of light. Don’t forget to invest in good quality fixtures that shield naked light bulbs to avoid glare.
