Next, you should measure your room to see how many fixtures you’ll need. In general, you’ll need one recessed light for every four to six square feet of ceiling space.

Choosing Housing & Lighting Options

The housing necessary for recessing lighting depends on your kitchen. If there is insulation above the ceiling, then you need IC housings. Otherwise you can use Non-IC housings. Consider using a mix of wide-angle lights for ambient lighting and focused, narrow-beam lights for task lighting.
