Tips to Help You Use Recessed Lighting in Your Kitchen

When calculating your kitchen renovation cost, you should always include the cost of investing in good lighting fixtures. As a kitchen remodeling expert, DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Orland Park highly recommends including the placement of a variety of lighting sources and types in your kitchen  remodeling plan.

If you want a sleek and minimalist lighting option that is very versatile, then consider investing in recessed lighting. Here are a few tips to help you use recessed lighting properly.

Creating a Kitchen Recessed Lighting Plan

Draw out a rough map of your kitchen space and note where you already have lights. Your recessed lighting needs to complement your existing lighting fixtures. Next, you should measure your room to see how many fixtures you’ll need. In general, you’ll need one recessed light for every four to six square feet of ceiling space.

Choosing Housing & Lighting Options

The housing necessary for recessing lighting depends on your kitchen. If there is insulation above the ceiling, then you need IC housings. Otherwise you can use Non-IC housings. Consider using a mix of wide-angle lights for ambient lighting and focused, narrow-beam lights for task lighting. If you are using recessed lights for the entire kitchen, then you should place narrow-beam lights on the perimeter and wide-angle lights in the center of the room.

Using Dimmers

A dimmer can help you quickly and easily adjust the mood of your kitchen. It can also help extend the lifespan of your lighting fixtures and save energy. We suggest using separate dimmer switches for different lighting zones. For example, there should be a separate dimmer for the lights over the kitchen island and the lights over the counters.
