How to Find a Contractor for Your Aging-in-Place Remodel

An aging-in-place remodel is a valuable investment for many homeowners who want to live independently (or semi-independently) and comfortably in their home. With that in mind, the remodeling process generally requires the assistance of a reputable “contractor near me” who has experience with accessible home renovation. Here are some tips for finding the right contractor for your aging-in-place remodel.

  1. Contact several contractors in your area. It is important to find a remodeler that you can communicate easily with at every step of the renovation process. You may want to ask your family, friends, colleagues or neighbors for recommendations based on similar home improvements they have completed in the past.
  2. Request the names and contact information of previous customers who have done similar work. Usually, a trustworthy contractor will be able to give you a list of customers they have worked with as a reference. Whenever possible, contact these individuals and ask if they were satisfied with the process and the end results.
  3. Make sure the contractor is properly licensed. Before signing on the dotted line, don’t forget to ask for a copy of the contractor’s license and, if applicable, copies of licenses for each subcontractor who will participate in the mobility remodeling project. Regulations for licensing vary by municipality, so make sure to check with the building officials in your community.
  4. Ask for certificates of insurance. In addition to verifying the license of the contractor you are considering, confirm whether or not they carry workers’ compensation and personal liability coverage. These insurance policies ensure that you will not be liable in case an accident causes damage to your property or an employee gets seriously injured while working on your home.
  5. Check with your local Better Business Bureau. When it comes to marketplace trust, Better Business Bureau is the leading organization for need-to-know information. Visiting the BBB site can tell you if there are any unresolved complaints filed against the contractor.
