4 Rules for Designing a Small Bedroom

How can you make the most of every inch of space in a cramped bathroom? By following these design rules!

1. Keep It Simple

It’s best to keep the layout of your bedroom simple. Remove unnecessary decorative details and keep the essentials. For instance, instead of nightstands, you can install mounted lights above your bed, which would naturally be the main visual focal point in any bedroom. Installing decorative overhead lighting, like a pendant or a chandelier, can add some much-needed flair to a simple bedroom layout.

Having trouble streamlining the layout? A trusted home remodeling contractor can help with the design process.

2. Maximize Natural Lighting

Create the illusion of more space by maximizing natural lighting, which makes rooms feel more spacious. Strategically placing mirrors and painting the bedroom walls with neutral or light colors can also help distribute natural light evenly. Avoid using dark colors. They absorb light, making your bedroom feel smaller.

3. Use Standard-Size Furniture

Using small furniture in a cramped bedroom might seem like a no-brainer, but smaller furniture can make a cramped bedroom feel even smaller. Standard-sized furniture will take up more space but can help make a small bedroom feel more spacious. As for the issue of storage space, choose taller furniture that gives you additional storage without taking up more floor space. Or you could choose multipurpose furniture like a daybed, which can function as a bed for sleeping or a sofa for lounging.

This doesn’t mean, however, that all the furniture in a small bedroom should be large. Pay attention to scale—a few larger pieces, combined with small throw pillows and other details, can give the illusion of spaciousness. If you’re having trouble, an interior remodeling expert can help you get the proportions in your bedroom right.

4. Install Space-Saving Features

One way to conserve space is to install sliding doors instead of hinged doors. Since sliding doors open sideways, they take up less space, not to mention they’re easier to open. Folding furniture is another space-saving feature worth considering. When not in use, you can fold and put it away under your bed or in your closet.
