Top 4 Things to Consider When Building a Child-Friendly Bathroom

For adults, shower and bath time is often a time for relaxation after a long day. For kids, bath time means fun time. You can make every bath time a fun experience by ensuring that your kids’ bathroom is child-friendly. However, if the bathroom your kids are using was not originally designed to be kid-friendly, you probably need a bathroom remodel to achieve that function.

Here are the top four things you should consider when planning a child-friendly bathroom.

Countertop Height

You might consider lowering the height of the vanity and adjacent countertop so kids won’t have to tip-toe when using the faucet and sink. However, kids will eventually outgrow this arrangement. A longer-term solution would be sticking with the standard countertop height but including a pull-out step. The step can be cleverly hidden at the bottom of the vanity. This is safer and sleeker compared to having a stool in the bathroom.

The Toilet

Look for a toilet that has an adjustable seat. This way, it can be used for potty training and beyond. You should also consider getting a soft-close lid to keep the toilet seat from pinching little fingers and making extra noise.

Flooring & Surfaces

It’s important to choose flooring material that is safe to walk on even when wet. It should be durable enough to endure the impact of objects that may fall on it. Porcelain tile is highly durable, and textured and matte surfaces are less slippery.

Hardware

Pulls and lever-type handles are easier to grab and use compared to knobs. Hooks and towel rings are also easier to use than towel bars, since little kids may find it difficult to hang their towels and clothes on bars.
