Choosing a Range Hood for Your New Kitchen

A kitchen range hood is an essential feature in a kitchen. Without adequate ventilation, unpleasant smells will linger in your kitchen and grease will settle on your cabinets. In addition to making sure your range hood has enough ventilation capacity, it’s important to choose a range hood style that complements your kitchen design.

Remember: when it comes to kitchen and interior design, consistency is key. Most range hoods are made from either wood (often used in traditional kitchens) or metal (choices include copper, stainless steel, zinc and enamel). In terms of range hood styles, there are more varied choices.

Range Hood Styles

  • Hearth-style range hoods – These are made from wood and embellished with onlays, corbels and moldings. Multiple decorative details make them suited to traditional kitchens. If you want to add a modern feel to your hearth-style range hood, your kitchen remodelers can make modifications to make it look and feel more contemporary. And if you prefer traditional kitchen designs, here’s a design tip: hearth hoods provide a nice frame for tile backsplashes.
  • Mantel hoods – Mantel hoods are also made from wood and integrated into the kitchen cabinet to streamline the kitchen design. If you want a bit more contrast to break up the monotony, there’s the option of choosing a mantel range hood with a different finish and color.
  • Wall-mounted range hoods – Wall-mounted range hoods are a common feature in mid-century modern kitchen designs.
  • Chimney hoods – Chimney hoods can be made from either wood or metal. They complement a wide variety of kitchen designs, and would make a great addition to just about any kitchen. They’re also the go-to choice for kitchens with no cabinets over the range area.
  • Ceiling-mounted range hoods – This minimalist range hood style is commonly used in open kitchens.

Things to Consider When Choosing a Range Hood Style

  • Functionality & integration into the kitchen design – Make sure the location of the range hood won’t interfere with prep work or meal preparations.
  • Architectural style – There’s a reason why certain range hood styles have traditionally been used in certain kitchen designs. It’s because they work so well together.
