Tips on Designing an Accessible Bedroom

Safety, accessibility and comfort are the first things you should consider when remodeling a bedroom for a person with mobility challenges. Here are tips to help you achieve a well-designed accessible bedroom from a trusted home remodeling contractor

Select the Right Bedroom Location

The best location for an accessible bedroom is the ground floor of the house. Keep in mind that having a nearby bathroom is essential when it comes to accessible bedroom design. One great addition to the bathroom is a curbless shower.

Make sure that there is a generous amount of open space around the bed. As much as possible, locate electrical outlets near the bed.

Choose a Comfortable Flooring Material

Carpeting is not a good option for accessible bedrooms. This material is not ideal for wheelchair users because it dramatically increases resistance, which makes movement challenging. However, if you still prefer carpeting, select a tightly woven, low-pile carpet. Home renovation experts suggest using materials like cork and vinyl tile.

Consider the Size of Doorways

For complete access, widen bedroom and adjacent bathroom doorways to 36 inches. You must consider the hardware of the doors as well. The ideal handle for accessible doors is a U-shaped or single-lever handle.

Ensure Sufficient Lighting

Accessible lighting makes a huge difference for someone who has vision problems or is physically challenged. The right balance of natural and artificial lighting is key to a well-lit bedroom. If you have smaller windows, you can achieve this by installing artificial lighting. The light switches should be installed by the doors and by the bed for convenience and safety. Consider installing fluorescent lights in smaller spaces like closets and bathrooms.

Paint Color Matters

The right paint colors help with the visibility of an accessible bedroom. This element of the room is especially important for individuals with vision impairment. Choose contrasting colors that form a color-blocked area in the room and make sure the color of the walls goes well with the flooring.
