3 Over-Improvement Mistakes to Avoid During a Home Remodel

Updating your living space is great but be cautious of over-improving your property, particularly compared to other homes in the neighborhood. After all, you don’t want to spend money on renovation and not recover a majority of the expense. Luckily, with the help of a professional home remodeling contractor, you can avoid making three common over-improvement mistakes.

Excessively Expanding the Living Area

One way to tell whether you have over-improved is to look around the neighborhood and compare the size of your home with your neighbors’. If you add so much square footage to your living space that it becomes twice as large as the homes around yours, then you have likely overstepped a boundary. In this case, “the bigger, the better” doesn’t apply.

Not Conforming to the Style of Your Neighborhood

For a home renovation project, deviating from the dominant style of homes in your neighborhood could cost you. For example, a Mediterranean-inspired home with stucco siding and tile roof built in a neighborhood where brick homes with asphalt composition shingle roofs dominate clashes with the neighborhood. The value of your property is more likely to be sustained when its features comply with the specific demands of the market.

Converting the Garage

Converting a garage to a living area is often a mistake when it comes over-improvement. If garage conversions are a common thing in your neighborhood, then you may be able to get away with it. However, if this isn’t a popular choice, you could be penalized at resale. A home without a garage may encourage potential buyers to offer less for it.
