How to Design a Home Gym That You’ll Actually Use

Being able to exercise at home, at your convenience can be a great motivator to keep yourself fit and healthy. However, the will to work out is not just about accessibility. Your workout environment has an impact on you too, so it’s crucial to have the right design for your home gym.

In this post, trusted home remodeling contractor DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Orland Park discusses factors that you should consider when designing your home gym.

Location

When choosing a room in your home for your gym, ensure that it is big enough to fit your equipment and allow you to move freely. That said, the basement is usually an ideal spot to convert into a gym. However, it can feel a little like a dungeon, which can make it less appealing for a workout. If you’re using your basement as a gym, you might want to improvise with good lighting and bright wall colors.

Flooring

Make sure that your flooring is well-suited to handle vigorous physical activity. Check the structural integrity of your floor as part of your home renovation project and add rubber mats to protect your body, particularly your joints. Exercising on a bare concrete floor can take a toll on your body.

Equipment

When picking equipment for your home gym, the first thing that you need to consider is the size and layout of the space. Then think of the exercises you normally do. If you’re into yoga, setting up a workout space can be easy. If your fitness routine involves free weights, a rowing machine, a stationary bike and a treadmill, you might want to spend more time thinking about what’s most important to your routine.

Storage

Keep your home gym clutter-free by planning out storage. Of course, this depends on the equipment you have. For mats, jump ropes, foam rollers and balls, installing a couple of cabinets will do. If you have weights, make sure to buy a rack so they won’t end up cluttering your floor.
