4 Remodeling Rules That Should Never Be Broken

When it comes to remodeling, there are certain rules that you should not break. Home remodeling contractor DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Orland Park explains why you’re better off sticking to these time-tested guidelines.

  1. Always plan ahead. Any type of remodeling work requires careful planning, since do-overs inflate remodeling costs and cause delays. Discussing the process with an experienced remodeler or friends who have had their homes renovated recently can give you an idea of a typical remodeling timeline. Make sure you book your remodeler early and finalize your material selections on time.

  1. Avoid DIY. There are many home improvements that can be done by taking the DIY route, but remodeling is not one of them. While the perceived cost savings can be attractive, you have to consider that a lot of the work involved in remodeling requires tools and training that you probably don’t have. Professionals are also less likely to make mistakes and have warranties in place in case a problem arises from workmanship issues.

  1. Be familiar with the process. Being familiar with the entire remodeling process can help you make informed decisions, particularly at times when quick decisions have to be made. You’re bound to be discussing a lot of industry-specific terms with your contractor and knowing the process—even though you won’t be doing any remodeling work—can help you get the results that you want.

  1. Be prepared for unplanned repairs. Sometimes structural issues stay hidden until it’s time for a remodel. Issues such as faulty electrical work and rot need to be addressed before construction can continue. Repair costs are usually not included with the estimate, so an “emergency” budget of about 10 to 20 percent of the estimated cost is recommended.
