Open Kitchens: Yea or Nay?

Here’s a never-ending debate we at DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Orland Park hear about often: open kitchens. Many clients who come to us with contemporary or transitional kitchen design ideas request open plans, and we understand the appeal. And yet it’s still a very polarizing topic—we’ve had a fair share of clients who are adamantly against open kitchens!

Love them or hate them, at the end of the day, the only “right” style of kitchen is what’s right for you. Here’s an unbiased look at the reasons different people love different kitchen layouts.

Benefits of Open Kitchens

  • They make a small kitchen look and feel bigger. Fewer partitions mean unobstructed sight lines and more natural light.

  • They make it possible for hosts to mingle with their guests even while they have things to attend to in the kitchen.

  • They make it easy for parents to multitask. Parents can work in the kitchen while keeping an eye on the kids as they play or do homework.

  • They make the kitchen the true “heart” of the home, visually as well as functionally.

Benefits of Closed Kitchens

  • They provide more countertop, cabinet and shelf space compared to open kitchens that have the same footprint.

  • They confine cooking odors and grease to the kitchen, preventing them from spreading to the rest of the home.

  • They make it easier for people to cook in privacy.

  • They’re easier and often less stressful to clean. Less dust and clutter are introduced from adjacent spaces, and meal prep messes aren’t easily seen from other parts of the home.
