What to Do After You’re Done With Your Remodel

Finally, after weeks of planning, design and construction, your home remodeling project is done! But wait … there are still a few things you’ll need to do before you can say you’re completely finished. Follow our handy post-remodel checklist.

Final Walkthrough

Schedule a final walkthrough with your contractor before paying your last bill. Check each room, making sure that work was done right and taking note of things that you’re not completely satisfied with. A reputable contractor will also look for imperfections and address them promptly.

Prepare to Clean

Renovations can generate a lot of dust and debris, so portions of your home will need a deep cleaning after the remodel. A good contractor will include cleanup as part of their service so when interviewing remodeling contractors, don’t forget to ask if cleanup is included in the quote. Also, we recommend replacing your HVAC filters as they tend to collect large amounts of dust during remodeling.

Speak With Your Insurance Agent

Document your project if you’re working on a major renovation and call your insurance company. It may be necessary to adjust the limits of your homeowner’s policy. Don’t forget to register the warranty for any new products or appliances you bought during your remodel.

Settle In

After your space has been cleaned, it’s time to move back in. You’ll have to decide which furnishings and decor to keep and replace. Consider which pieces go well with the style and layout of your renovated space.

Create a Maintenance Checklist

Ask your contractor about the new features of your home. Study how to maintain materials that you aren’t familiar with and create a maintenance checklist.
