3 Common Kitchen Island Design Mistakes You Should Avoid

Adding an island to your kitchen design is an excellent way to create storage space and counter space. An island makes your kitchen look stylish and function better. However, you shouldn’t just add an island for the sake of adding an island. Certain kitchen island designs don’t work in certain kinds of kitchens. In today’s post, DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Ogden, one of the top kitchen remodeling contractors in the area, talks about common kitchen island design mistakes you should avoid.

1. Forgetting the Lighting

If you’re planning to use your kitchen island for food prep, then you need to have enough light to see what you’re doing. Prepping food can be difficult if you don’t have enough lighting. Make sure that your kitchen island is well-illuminated when planning your kitchen remodel. If you’re going to eat at your kitchen island, then consider installing dimmable lights. The lighting you’ll use for prep work might be too bright for eating at the island.

2. Making the Island Too Large

Your kitchen might feel spacious right now, but if you add a kitchen island that’s too large, it will suddenly feel cramped. As a rule of thumb, you’ll need at least 42 to 48 inches of open space around the island to use it comfortably. If your kitchen is less than 13 feet wide, then we don’t recommend that you install a kitchen island at all. If your kitchen is U-shaped, then your kitchen opening needs to be at least 10 feet wide to accommodate a kitchen island.

3. Blocking Workflow

Your kitchen island needs to be far enough away to avoid obstructing the path between your fridge, stove and sink. The area between these spots is called the working triangle. You can cook more efficiently if the path between these areas is unobstructed. The goal of the working triangle is to allow the cook to seamlessly move between food storage, food preparation and cooking. A misplaced island can interrupt workflow and make cooking harder than it should be.
