Kitchen Layout Do’s & Don’ts

The opportunity to give your kitchen a complete makeover is not something that comes around very often. So when the time comes for a kitchen remodel, you want to make sure that you get the best possible results. For that, you need a good layout. While the topic of kitchen layouts is too broad to cover here in detail, there are a few do’s and don’ts that we can share to put you on the right path.

Do’s

Reduce Traffic

Kitchens are high-traffic areas. Even if you don’t live with a lot of people, chances are your kitchen is still going to see a lot of action. To minimize the chaos that typically goes on in a busy and well-used kitchen, make sure the primary pathway through it is hazard-free and will not be obstructed by your fridge or oven doors when open.

Get a Kitchen Island

Since your kitchen is likely to be the heart of your home, it is a good idea to add a kitchen island with extra storage and seating. Even if you do not have a lot of space to work with, you’ll be surprised at what can be achieved when you hire an experienced kitchen renovation company.

Think About Storage

One of the biggest complaints we hear from our clients is not having enough storage space. Even if you feel like you have enough cabinet and drawer space, spending a little extra on wall storage is never a bad idea. Storage walls are a great way to make use of typically wasted space.

Don’ts

Don’t Forget About Lighting

Nothing ruins an otherwise well-designed kitchen faster than poor lighting. Good kitchen lighting should include general lighting for overall illumination, accent lighting to give it a bit of character and task lighting for safety when you’re using sharp knives and other kitchen tools.

Don’t Skip the Backsplash

With so many important decisions to be made, the backsplash often sinks to the bottom of the list of things to consider. Its material and design is either not well-thought-out or, worse, left out of the plan altogether. This is a mistake. A good backsplash is not only a smart way to keep your kitchen clean, it’s also a relatively inexpensive way to give your kitchen a ton of character.
