Wheelchair Accessible Bathroom

After an in-home fall and injury, this family knew they had to do something about their son’s bathroom. He’s a 22-years-old and living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Greater Rockwall worked with the family to design a fully-functional accessible bathroom with structural changes to the door and vanity for wheelchair access, accessible toilet and sink features as well as a zero-barrier shower with grab bars for support and stability.

This wonderful family had a need to have a functioning secondary bathroom that would accommodate wheelchair accessibility. Because of not having this type of bathroom, the family had to go to a relative’s home to shower in a zero-entry shower. This inconvenience caused them to begin thinking of a solution to their home bathroom situation. After searching for a remodeling company through Google, this family found and contacted DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Greater Rockwall to inquire about transforming a standard hall bathroom to a wheelchair accessible room this immediate need in their family. After meeting with DreamMaker and following their process, this homeowner decided to proceed with DreamMaker. DreamMaker listened to their desires and suggestions, brought the many product samples to their Design Center and pulled together every item needed to make this bathroom the best functioning bathroom for wheelchair accessibility. The lady of the home was extremely knowledgeable of the most minute details which has brought tremendous impact to the ease and functionality of this bathroom. Now they are able to provide more independence for the family member using the wheelchair, along with a safer, better area for the caregiver. The family appreciated the relationship developed with DreamMaker as they all worked together to provide the wonderful, much-needed bathroom. What a joy to see the benefits of this family being able to fully use their secondary bathroom with a wheelchair!

This client was able to use their bathroom, allowing the family member to have more independence and safety when showering…the previous shower had a ledge to be stepped over which had caused a severe fall resulting in broken bones. We worked with the family member who most needed the changes by testing out the products both at their home and at our Design Center – the vanity height, the light switch placement, grab bar locations, placement of the showerhead and hand wand, the perfect slope for the shower drain and depth of the shower drain to prevent water splashing and overflow onto the bathroom floor, the flooring was tested at our Design Center to insure safety from slipping. We also had the one in the wheelchair test out the edge profile of the countertop at our Design Center to ensure comfort when their arms were resting on it. A bonus was were we able to test several paint colors and find the one the homeowner originally was trying to locate a couple of years ago!!

They loved the fresh clean tiles, the attractive ADA grab bar and vanity. The new paint color was exactly what they were looking for and the bidet worked perfectly to meet their needs. They commented that working with DreamMaker was easy and enjoyable. They also truly appreciated how thorough Clint was and his willingness to work out all the details.
