A tall ceiling is an important design element if one wants to create a spacious room, but it may not be an option if the ceiling cannot be raised. Perhaps the room has another room above it; maybe it’s a converted attic. However, it doesn’t mean you have to make do with a cramped-looking room. In today’s post, local home remodeler DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Greater Rockwall shares some of the tricks designers do to create the illusion of taller ceilings.
- Paint the ceiling with light colors. Let’s start with something simple — paint. Light-colored surfaces are naturally reflective, and diffuses light that comes through the windows and light fixtures. Painting the ceiling with a light color creates this effect and makes the ceiling look taller than it actually is. Contrastingly, a dark-colored ceiling looks closed off, an effect that can be used to “bring down” ceilings that are close to two stories tall.
- Emphasize vertical lines. Vertical lines direct the eyes towards the ceiling, giving the impression of height. This can be done with striped wallpaper, installing vertically oriented art pieces, or with tall bookshelves, among others.
- Choose low-profile furniture. Low-profile furniture, such as coffee tables and low-back sofas, is designed to sit closer to the ground. This emphasizes the space between their highest points and the ceiling that adds to the illusion of space.
- Install recessed lighting. Recessed lighting eliminates the need for hanging fixtures and, like low-profile furniture, emphasizes the space from the ceiling downwards.
- Hang your curtains high. Curtains are typically hung closer to the top of the window frame, which sometimes leaves a gap between. Hang the curtains closer to the ceiling to remove the gap, which gives the illusion of long curtains and, therefore, taller ceilings. The same effect can be achieved with vertical blinds and similar types of window treatments.
