Bathroom Lighting Do’s & Don’ts You Need to Know

Your bathroom is meant to help you jump-start your mornings as well as provide relaxation after a long day. And like every other room in your home, it should also have good lighting. Choosing just one wrong fixture can affect how you apply makeup or make showering more difficult. As a reputable bathroom remodeler, DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Elizabethtown understands how adequate lighting impacts your bathroom space. Here are a few tips to help you make better use of lighting.

Do: Practice Proper Lighting Placement

When planning your bathroom remodel, you need to choose the right lighting fixtures and know where they should be placed. For instance, an overhead lighting fixture is a must for all bathrooms and should be placed over your vanity. This will add just enough lighting between your face and the mirror. You can also add sconces either above the mirror or on both sides to enhance your reflection.

Don’t: Ignore CRI & Color Temperature

The color rendering index (CRI) and the color temperature can be found when looking at the information of almost any LED bulb. Color temperature is measured in Kelvin (K), and it’s used to describe the color of the white light that a lighting fixture provides. The CRI is the measurement of how true-to-life a light source renders color.

Light fixtures that have a high color temperature and a low CRI can look unnatural, which can affect how you use the vanity in a bathroom. Be sure to take a close look at the type of light bulbs you install; we recommend going for warmer color temperatures and high CRI. If you’re not sure which to pick, you can always consult your trusted bathroom contractor.

Do: Determine How Much Lighting You Need

Too much light can make your bathroom feel uncomfortable, even if you choose fixtures with warm color temperatures and high CRI. Ample overhead and task lighting are usually needed over the vanity, but if you think that it’s too bright, you can always consider track lighting as an alternative.
