Accessible Bathrooms: Key Features to Add

Designing an accessible bathroom renovation won’t be easy without an experienced contractor. When you choose to work with DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Elizabethtown, you get not only professional workmanship, but full commitment as well. Our Independence by Design™ services provide the best accessibility solutions based on your needs and preferences. Your bathroom space will have the necessary features to ensure a safer, more convenient experience for those with reduced mobility issues.

Important Accessibility Features

Grab Bars & a Raised Toilet Seat

Accessible toilets aren’t complete without grab bars installed to provide balance and support. Usually, grab bars are installed on each side of the toilet, though some designs make use of only a single bar. When installing a grab bar near the toilet, it should be at least 18 inches to the nearest wall or fixture. If you’re placing two bars, they should be about 36 inches apart.

A raised toilet seat provides greater convenience when sitting and standing up. When you raise the seat, you make it safer to use since the height is almost equal to that of most wheelchairs.

Ample Space

As trusted mobility remodeling contractors, we know how important it is to have ample space in an accessible bathroom. There should be enough space on both sides of the toilet to accommodate those using crutches or a wheelchair. Having enough space makes it easy to transfer to and from the toilet seat. There should also be adequate space underneath the vanity/sink so that those in a wheelchair can roll up to it with ease.

Convenient Toiletry Placement

Make sure to consider the placement of bathroom essentials such as soap dishes, toilet paper, towel bars and other toiletries. These should be within easy reach of those with reduced mobility issues.
