What to Avoid When Designing Your Home Office

If you’re thinking of creating a dedicated workspace in your home, work closely with your home remodeler to plan every detail of your project. Your home office should help you focus better at work, so you have to avoid errors that make it less effective at boosting your productivity. Here are some common errors in home office design that you should avoid.

Common Errors

Putting Your Workspace in Your Bedroom

It sounds like a great idea to be able to wake up and head straight to work. Turning on your laptop and checking emails in bed seems like a relaxing way to go about your work tasks. However, for some people, this setup just doesn’t work. If you’ve been working in your bedroom for some time now and you’ve been having difficulty sleeping, consider separating your bedroom and workspace. If you don’t have the space for a separate home office, try to dedicate an area of your living room or dining room.

Not Isolating Your Home Office

If you’re remodeling only a small space, you can isolate this area from the rest of your home by placing a room divider or opting for a desk with built-in walls. An isolated workspace enables you to avoid distractions, increasing your focus and concentration. Leaving an isolated workspace also tells your body it’s time to “turn off” work and relax.

Too Much Natural Light

Natural light is a great mood enhancer, but too much of it can be distracting. You can install shutters to control the light levels and block harsh sunlight at various times of the day. Shutters also reduce indoor visibility, giving you the privacy you need. Your home renovator may recommend curtains or blinds as an alternative to shutters.

Using the Wrong Chair

Your office chair should encourage good working posture while being comfortable enough to sit in all day long. Make sure your chair can accommodate your height and has soft but structured material that doesn’t chafe or cause discomfort.

Selecting the Wrong Desk

Your work desk must be able to accommodate your laptop and other digital devices and accessories you need for work. Avoid placing too many unnecessary objects on your desk that make it look cluttered and cramped.

Inadequate Storage

Work that involves folders, documents and paperwork will need filing cabinets or other appropriate storage solutions. Consult your remodeler for the best options for your needs.
