The Findings in a Nutshell

This year, the National Association of REALTORS® Research Group conducted a study to find out why homeowners renovated their home, how successful the project was and how much satisfaction they got from finishing a remodeling project. Researchers used the Joy Score to measure satisfaction levels.

Fifty-eight percent of the homeowners surveyed said they felt happy when they finished their renovation, while 38% felt satisfied. The average Joy Score was 9.6.

Remodeling Projects With the Highest Joy Scores

A complete kitchen overhaul, including kitchen cabinet refinishing (Joy Score: 10). The kitchen is the central hub of activity in the average household. Kitchen renovations are mostly aimed at improving functionality which, judging by its perfect Joy Score, clearly raised the level of indoor comfort homeowners enjoy.
Closet renovation (Joy Score: 10). When it comes to indoor comfort, perception is just as important as function. A messy closet can make it seem like your home is more cramped than it really is, while an organized closet that’s easy to access can make the layout of your home feel more streamlined and harmonious.
Interior paint job (Joy Score: 9.8). Speaking of perception, don’t underestimate the impact a vibrant color scheme can have on the mood of a room.
