Bathroom Layout Do’s and Don’ts

Bathroom upgrades are usually one of the most expensive home improvements. That’s why careful, in-depth planning is required to ensure you’ll achieve the bathroom you want.

To guarantee your new bathroom meets all your needs, you should take note of these bathroom layouts do’s and don’ts from a reputable home remodel expert.

Do’s

  • Utilize natural lighting. Having abundant natural lighting in your bathroom is beneficial because it ensures sufficient illumination and contributes to the room’s appeal. It can make the space more spa-like, soothing, and functional. Position essential features like the sink, bathtub or mirror near a window so you can save on electricity during the day. This will also make your bathroom routine more convenient and relaxing.
  • Use the statement bath layout. Placing the bathtub center-stage is often highly preferred by homeowners with a larger bathroom or master bathroom. In this case, the tub is best placed centrally against the focal wall, which is typically the wall facing the bathroom door or underneath the window. This layout can give your bathroom a sense of occasion, especially if you have plenty of square footage.
  • Consider floor design. A shift in level in a large bathroom can serve as a design element or a practical feature. It can create a stage for a centerpiece bathtub or help address plumbing issues. However, one-level, uninterrupted bathroom flooring can have the same effect as wall-hung furniture — it can make the room feel bigger. This is ideal if your bathroom remodel is centered on designing a small bathroom or maximizing space in a large bathroom.

Don’ts

  • Skipping storage. Inadequate storage is often the result of too much emphasis on appearance and a lack of focus on functionality. An example of this is opting for a recessed mirror cabinet with space for items like a toothbrush, hairdryer, and makeup, instead of a mirror attached to the wall.
  • Not creating separate zones. Create separate areas for the bath and shower, vanity, and toilet, especially if you have a large bathroom. You can easily do this by building a stud wall to create zones. This concept allows you to improve your bathroom experience and give the room a more luxurious vibe.
  • Failing to consider the location of bath accessories. The placement of accessories like towel bars can impact the functionality of your bathroom. Make sure you don’t place commonly used objects out of reach or wall-mounted accessories in the way of cabinet doors or drawers. Consider how you’ll use and navigate the area when deciding where to put accessories in your bathroom layout.
