How to Bring More Natural Light Into the Bathroom

Natural lighting rounds out a complete bathroom lighting scheme, therefore it must be included in every bathroom remodeling plan. In today’s post, local bathroom remodeler DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Tyler shares a quick guide on how you can bring natural light into your bathroom.

The Benefits of Natural Lighting

Natural light streaming through windows, skylights and solar tubes can function as the bathroom’s main source of illumination during the day. Visually, it helps create a pleasant and inviting space, as well as a sense of spaciousness. With less reliance on electrical lighting, natural light can help you save on your annual utility costs. Regular exposure to natural light helps regulate human circadian rhythms and promote regular sleep cycles. It can also help boost your mood, reduce stress and improve your productivity.

Tips on Drawing More Natural Light

The easiest way to bring natural light into the bathroom is to open the windows. However, this may not be an option for everyone — it may make the bathroom too visible from the outside, or maybe the bathroom isn’t abutting an exterior wall. Here are some tips on how you can let more natural light into the bathroom.

  • Install sheer window treatments. Instead of drapes or blinds, install sheer curtains or similar light-colored window treatments. They help prevent anyone from casually peering into the windows, but still allow ample natural light through. If window replacement is an option, consider getting windows with frosted or stained glass.
  • Choose a light color palette. Light-colored surfaces reflect light, therefore a light color palette can help distribute the light coming from your windows. This is ideal if the bathroom has poorly-lit corners or only has a single natural light source. Mirrors likewise have the same effect. Make sure that the bathroom’s reflective surfaces are considered when you’re planning a bathroom remodel.
  • Install a skylight or solar tubes. A skylight is a great alternative to windows if the latter is not providing enough light. It can also function as an exhaust vent that can help flush out excess humidity. If a skylight isn’t possible, consider getting solar tubes.
