Choosing the Right Shower Drain

Drains used to be simple. They served a practical function and were probably the least-thought-about bathroom accessory in terms of aesthetics. That’s most likely why, until fairly recently, homeowners were never asked what type of shower drain they’d like. In fact, there are homeowners who still might be surprised to learn that there are actually a variety of choices when it comes to shower drains!

With more educated homeowners looking for drains that can deliver on both style and function, it’s useful to know what’s available to include in bathroom remodel designs.

Linear Drains

A top pick, linear drains feature a narrow profile and are one of the best options for a primary shower drain. The drain must be set tight to the wall and have an opening of at least 2.48 square inches, as smaller openings may affect flow rates. You’ll also want to ensure a seamless transition from the dry area to the wet one.

Traditional Point Drains

A regular or traditional drain, also known as a point drain, is a higher flow rate drain that can handle a huge volume of water without sacrificing on style. If your local code requires a three-inch drain and waste line, consider this a viable option. You can always select a more custom-looking grill from a huge selection now available on the market.

Ready-Made Shower Bases

If you don’t have the time or budget for a custom shower pan, a ready-made unit will often fit the bill. A ready-made shower base won’t stain as easily as tile. Many do require that a concrete bed be built underneath, so double-check with the manufacturer before purchasing and make sure that this is done during installation.
