The Dos and Don’ts of Creating a Bathroom Layout

The layout is a major consideration in creating a well-designed bathroom. If you miss one area of the layout, the functionality and beauty of the space may suffer. Every bath, large or small, needs a decent layout to shine. Trusted bathroom remodel contractor DreamMaker of The Woodlands shares a few dos and don’ts when planning a bathroom layout.

Bathroom Layout Dos

  • Do avoid having empty space in your layout. Placing fixtures and fittings around the edges of a large bathroom can make the space look and feel cold and empty. To avoid this, consider a double-entry shower by separating the shower and vanity with stud walls. If you want a large tub, place it in the middle of the room so it may be a focal point. Add a bench, side chair, or bespoke cabinetry to fill the excess space.
  • Do focus on storage. Function and aesthetics should be taken into consideration while designing a bathroom. This way, you won’t run out of space for the basics. Besides vanity drawers and cabinets, look for other custom storage options to incorporate into your bathroom. Larger items can be stored in vertical wall-hung cabinets, which you can include in your layout. For a more streamlined design, recess your medicine cabinet into the wall instead of attaching a mirror.
  • Do create zones. If you have a particularly large bathroom space, consider establishing a beautiful zoned bathroom space by creating a room within a room. When planning the layout, section off the shower space for an elegant, spa-like feel. Use sleek glass and metal panels as partition walls so you can highlight that particular area of the bathroom.

Bathroom Layout Don’ts

  • Don’t disregard the plumbing. Although there are many possibilities for bathroom renovation, it’s best to plan around the existing plumbing to save time and money. New pipes and drains need to be dragged up on the floors and ceilings, depending on where the bathroom is located. Connect new fixtures to the existing water lines while replacing old ones.
  • Don’t expose the toilet. It is never a good idea to have your toilet located somewhere in the bathroom where it will be in full view upon opening the door. If relocating isn’t possible, you can make some tweaks to your layout. The simplest way would be to change the door swing’s direction. Doing so helps the toilet remain hidden behind the door. If there’s more than enough space between the toilet and door, consider building a partition wall to separate the two.
  • Don’t stick to just downlights. Too many bathrooms have strong downlights that create harsh shadows, which can be to anyone’s detriment when shaving or applying makeup. Create a design plan that takes ambient lighting for the space into account. One or two ceiling lights or movable track lighting should work. Add wall sconces on either side of the vanity mirror to create clear, attractive lighting as you get ready for the day.
