Creating the Ideal Lighting Design for Your Kitchen Island

If you have sufficient space in your kitchen, you can likely benefit from an island. You can use it for added storage, cooking, dining and entertaining space. But for a kitchen island to be appealing and functional, it needs good lighting design. A trusted kitchen remodeler shares tips to help you illuminate this versatile kitchen space here.

Lighting Considerations

How Much Space Is Available?

Consider the size of your kitchen before creating a lighting design. This determines the amount of light your island needs and the kinds of fixtures you can get. You want to get fixtures that are proportional to your kitchen. It is also essential that they produce just the right amount of light; too much or too little can cause discomfort.

A general rule when creating a kitchen island design is to ensure 35 to 50 lumens of light per square foot. Doing so will give your island sufficient light and keep the space useful.

Know Your Options

A reliable kitchen contractor will present you with lighting options and help you decide which is ideal for your space. Ideally, recessed lights should be the main lighting source for kitchens. Once you have decided where the recessed lights will go, you will then have to choose between pendants and linear chandeliers to light the island. There’s also the option of having recessed lighting only.

Pendant lighting is more common over a kitchen island because of its appeal. You can get pendants in various styles, sizes and heights. Depending on the size of your island, you can have two, three or more pendants installed above it. Linear chandeliers are also attractive and can be the focal point of your kitchen. However, you can usually only have one chandelier installed, so it may not light a large island sufficiently.

Consider Ambient & Dimmable Lights

You can use lights to create different moods in your kitchen. For instance, dimmable lighting is ideal for romantic dinners. You can add ambient lighting beneath the cabinets on your kitchen island for added appeal. It is a great option for modern kitchens and homeowners who love hosting parties and gatherings.
