Remodeling Advice You Won’t Hear From Most Contractors

There are plenty of unforeseen circumstances in a remodel that may cause it to become more complicated than you initially expected. Some contractors won’t tell you about these unanticipated factors, adding to the uncertainty. As you start evaluating your bath or kitchen estimate, think about the type of contractor you want to work with. You’re better off choosing someone who will provide a good idea of what to expect once your project is underway. They might offer the following pieces of advice:

  1. “Your remodeling project may actually take longer.” The start and end date is typically included in a home remodeling contract, but you shouldn’t expect that this will be exact. What should only take a few days of construction work may end up taking longer because of various unwelcome surprises. An extended project timeline happens more often than you think, so you’ll want to prepare yourself to calmly deal with any change.
  1. “Things can go wrong, so make sure to prepare for them.” There are cases where additional repair work is required before the remodel can proceed. Of course, any extra repairs will be added to the overall kitchen or bathroom cost. To ensure you remain on budget, set aside a fund for contingencies. Doing this is especially crucial if you’re remodeling an older home.
  1. “Let’s discuss your ultimate goal for the remodel.” Discussing your specific needs with your contractor allows them to create design solutions that will best meet those needs. If you need to make your home more accessible, for example, they’ll redesign the current layout for you. Not all contractors ask their clients what they need in detail, and some homeowners are content to agree to whatever the contractor suggests. The best thing to do is be proactive about establishing clear communication with your remodeler, discussing your vision thoroughly in order to get the results you want.
