The Do’s & Don’ts of Creating a Kitchen Layout

When planning a kitchen renovation, one of the first things that you have to think about is the layout. The layout will determine what features your kitchen will have and where they will go. If planned right, you’ll get a functional space where you can prepare and cook meals with ease while entertaining guests.

DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of South Valley shares some do’s and don’ts of creating a kitchen layout.

Do’s

Identify the kitchen island’s main function.

A kitchen island can add a great deal of functionality to your space. However, you must first determine how you’ll be using it. If it is going to serve a dual purpose, like cooking and dining, make sure that there is enough space so the cooktop is separated from the dining area. In addition to storage cabinets and drawers, you may also install a sink or a dishwasher underneath the island.

Establish wide walkways.

A kitchen with wide walkways allows for smooth foot traffic in and out of the space. This also prevents restrictions on how many people can use the kitchen at any given time. As you plan your kitchen remodel, make sure that the pathways are at least 36 inches wide. This way, you will not bump into people as you make your way through the kitchen.

Plan your landing space.

It’s not something that is always thought of but a landing space promotes ease of use and safety in your kitchen. It is a spot to quickly place hot items coming out of your oven or microwave. You don’t want to walk across your entire kitchen just to put a hot pan down. Make sure to allow at least 15 inches of countertop space on each side of your cooktop and refrigerator.

Don’ts

Skimp on lighting.

Lighting is crucial to the aesthetics and functionality of your kitchen. With dim lighting, prepping, cooking and cleaning up can be a struggle. When planning your layout, make sure there is adequate artificial and natural lighting. Windows should bring in enough sunlight to brighten the space. Come nighttime, you’ll want the space to be well-lit – ambient lighting combined with task lights should do the trick.

Ignore distance between fixtures.

Some homeowners are focused on the kitchen’s aesthetics so much that they tend to forget about the aspect of functionality. When planning your layout, make sure that the distance between important fixtures is neither too close nor too far to prevent seamless workflow. For example, you’ll want the refrigerator to be closer to the sink.
