Tips to Design a Multigenerational Family Home

Fitting grandparents, parents and children under a single roof has a lot of great advantages. For one thing, it is more economical since most expenses are shared. With the rising cost of housing and healthcare, multigenerational living offers a viable solution for many families. Multigenerational living also promotes closer bonds between family members.

The trick to multigenerational living is to design your home with comfort, privacy and accessibility in mind. So before you ask your contractor for a home remodel estimate, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Changes to Consider

Add Ensuite Bathrooms

If you are lucky enough to be doing a complete renovation, you should consider adding ensuite bathrooms for parents and grandparents. In a multigenerational home, bathrooms are one of the busiest places in the house, so sharing them with a lot of people can be a major pain point. By building ensuite bathrooms, you can eliminate squabbles before they begin, resulting in more harmonious living.

Spread Living Quarters Out

Privacy, or the lack thereof, is one of the biggest concerns when it comes to multigenerational living. This is why experienced contractors that specialize in accessible remodeling recommend that you space your bedrooms out between different levels to maximize privacy. While it may seem more natural to place all living quarters on the second floor, it really isn’t the most practical option, especially if you have aging family members with mobility issues.

Add Lots of Light

To see well, older family members will need a lot more light than younger people. Be sure to stay away from lighting styles that have cords that might present tripping hazards. These days, you can also install smart bulbs that respond to voice commands so that seniors do not have to fumble in the dark to switch on the lights.

Offer Separate Entrances

If possible, offer separate entrances for family members that may need them. In a multigenerational home, it is not uncommon for some family members to be up and about early in the morning, while others may work late into the night. This reduces traffic throughout the day and makes each family member feel more independent and comfortable.
