Expert Tips on Planning a Vision for Your Home

An experienced home renovator consistently applies some basic interior design principles in their projects. These principles act as a guide to transform simple rooms into impactful spaces. With the proper application, you will feel like everything in your home makes sense.

The Principles

Balance

When it comes to interior design, balance refers to the equal distribution of visual weight in a space. Symmetrical, asymmetrical and radial are the three types of balance. Symmetrical balance is where you have two objects in an equal position on opposite sides, for instance, two couches facing each other with a coffee table between them.

Asymmetrical balance is more common in homes today. You can use it by placing two different objects with equal visual weight in the room. While not as easy to achieve as symmetrical balance, asymmetrical balance can help you design a stimulating home interior.

Lastly, there is radial symmetry, where design elements surround a center point. It’s not as common as the other types of balance but can add more visual interest to your space. One example of radial balance is placing chairs around a round dining table.

Harmony

All elements of your design should complement each other to achieve a harmonious-looking home. An excellent way to create harmony is through color schemes. Select at least four colors and use them throughout your home. A skilled home remodeler will use your preferred colors in different shades, shapes and textures for a unified interior.

A Focal Point

A focal point will bring more life and interest to a room and prevent it from looking plain. Well-designed spaces usually have one element that stands out from the rest, such as beautiful artwork, an elegant chandelier or an expansive picture window framing an outdoor view. Another way to create a point of interest in a room is to use statement furniture pieces.

Scale & Proportion

Proportion pertains to the ratio between the size of one part to another. On the other hand, scale is the relationship between the size of one object and the area where it is placed. Make sure that the elements of a room are ideal for its size to keep it from looking cramped.

Rhythm

In interior design, rhythm involves visual pattern repetition, continuity and movement. You can achieve these principles by using the same shape or color in different instances within a space. The repetitive use of an element initiates eye movement. In your bedroom, you can demonstrate rhythm by using the same color in the sheets and curtains, and using it again in a lamp or wall decor.
