Remodeling Your Bathroom: What Should You Do First?

Once you have decided to remodel your bathroom, it’s time to make selections for your new space. To help you get started, you need a plan. This helps make the decision-making process more manageable and reduces stress. A carefully designed plan also keeps you stay on track with the remodeling process.

A professional bathroom contractor can help you formulate a solid plan. Instead of searching online for a “bathroom remodeler near me“, turn to the experts at DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Southern Lakes. In this article, we will explain what order to follow for your remodeling project.

Important Features

Vanity

The vanity is the most used and visible part of your bathroom. As such, the color and base of the vanity play a significant role in your remodeling project. The color sets the tone and feel of the bathroom: is it relaxing or sophisticated? It can either match or complement the tile. For instance, a crisp, clean white can warm up a bathroom with gray tiles.

The base comes in three types. A toe-kick vanity runs the width of the cabinet and rests on the floor, which is a typical look for a vanity. Vanities with legs offer a more custom look while floating vanities are mounted to the wall and open up the floor space below.

If you opt for a more customized vanity, you have to select a countertop and sink. In general, the countertop should match the vanity. It can be stone, wood or even acrylic. A sink, on the other hand, is usually overmount, undermount or vessel. It can also be made in a variety of materials such as ceramic or cast iron.

Tile

Tile is one of the most important components of your bathroom. It covers your floors, walls and, in some cases, shower floors. It should be beautiful as well as functional. It can be made from ceramic, porcelain or metal, in a wide variety of sizes and shapes. The tile on the floor doesn’t have to be the same as that on the walls around the tub or shower space.

Fixtures & Finishes

The next thing on your list should be fixtures and finishes. The bathroom faucet should match your shower or bath fixtures but not necessarily your vanity hardware. Mixing materials and styles, after all, makes your bathroom space all the more unique. There are plenty of finishes for faucets as well, from brass to nickel.

You must also choose between a bathtub and shower. Bathtubs offer relaxation and comfort, while showers are more accessible and great for tiny bathroom spaces. If you want both, you may want to consider a walk-in bath.

Lighting

Finally, you need to choose effective bathroom lighting. In bathrooms, the brighter the bulbs, the better. When making selections, be sure to include vanity lighting. It can hang above your mirror but if you have extra space, you can add sconces on either side of the mirror for a more flattering reflection. If sconces are not an option, consider recessed lights for a more balanced glow.

If you have a large space, consider a chandelier or pendant in the center of the bathroom or above the bathtub. Most chandeliers or pendants also come as part of a line of lighting, making it easier for you to choose multiple lights. Since lighting fixtures come in many styles and finishes, the easiest way to choose is by matching them with your faucet and shower fixtures.
