Wet Room Part 1: Why Consider It for Your Home

Wet rooms may look like any other traditional bathroom, except they’re made to withstand constant moisture and humidity. They can also be stylish and flexible, with features that provide an enhanced bathroom experience while ensuring safety and convenience for you and your loved ones. If you’re planning one for your home, working with a professional home remodel contractor can go a long way in designing one based on your specifications.

How Wet Rooms Are Built

Wet rooms share many similarities with their traditional counterparts. However, what sets them apart is that the floors and walls are “tanked” or sealed with a type of waterproof layer. This is done by applying plastic or rubber materials in these areas as a membrane sheet before tiling.

Another notable characteristic of wet rooms is that the shower flooring is on the same level as the rest of the bathroom space. A shower tray is laid over the sub-flooring before the tiles. This is slightly sloped so that all the water goes into a single drain. To ensure the water doesn’t get to the rest of your home, the threshold of the door to your wet room will be raised to at least five millimeters.

How They Differ From Traditional Bathrooms

Wet rooms may have similar features to walk-in showers, but their main difference is that the entire space has an open-plan design with the whole floor altered to allow water to drain into a single drainage unit. They also don’t have a door in their shower area but do have the glass panels act as a partition to the rest of the space. While they still help prevent the shower water from splashing the rest of the room when in use, you can still have shower screens installed for additional protection.

Despite being designed to get wet, a wet room can still be more stylish and efficient than a traditional bathroom space. Ensure that the job gets done successfully, work with a professional bathroom remodel expert such as DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen!

Why Are They Perfect for Your Home?

Unlike a traditional bathroom, a wet room can provide better features from which you and your family can benefit. For instance, the floors are already accessible, so there aren’t any raised or lowered areas that may otherwise lead to slipping and tripping injuries. Since it’s easier to walk in and out of the shower and bath area, it becomes a big convenience for your aging loved ones and those with limited mobility. It’s even designed with minimal lines on the floor and walls which helps make cleaning easier to accomplish.
