Things to Consider When Building a Second Bathroom

Sometimes, you may feel like the only bathroom in your home is no longer enough to accommodate your family’s growing needs. If you’ve ever waited for a family member to step out of the bathroom before using it, consider adding an extra one. While it offers many advantages, you must first cover important bases before you can commit to a bathroom quote from your remodeler. Here’s a look at some of them:

Bathroom Size

A full bathroom with a tub and vanity sink is typically around five by eight feet. A half bath, on the other hand, measures around 16 to 20 square feet on average. If you have a sizable home, finding a good location for your new bathroom should be easy if you know where to look. You might have a few location options in mind, but you also have to make sure your new bathroom space will not disrupt the rest of the home layout. It may even be possible to add a third bathroom if you have the space for it, but it will also depend on how much you’re willing to spend.

Space and Location

Depending on where you choose to build your new bathroom, it can be possible in your current home layout without expanding the living space. Keep in mind, however, that the location you choose can often affect the cost of your bathroom estimate. Some of the usual places to build additional bathrooms include:

  • Bedroom

Some bedrooms can be large enough for contractors to renovate part of the space into a bathroom. The renovations can be tight, but you need at least a three-foot slice from either side of the bedroom to build a proper bathroom complete with a toilet, sink, and shower stall. Some homeowners also tend to install a shared bathroom between two adjacent rooms!

  • Oversized Closet/Wardrobe

If your master bedroom or guest room has an oversized closet or walk-in wardrobe, the space can be partly renovated into a powder room or half bath. Depending on your desired size and design, it may not even be necessary to tear the walls down to expand the space. Of course, the new bathroom will take up some of your closet/wardrobe storage, but you can easily fix this by adding more shelves and cabinets in your new bathroom or bedroom. If the space is tight, your hired remodeler may even suggest several smart storage solutions for the project.

  • Hallway

Most hallways in homes can have unused space that can be enough to build a bathroom. If this is the case with your current home layout, you can choose to build one end of your hallway that isn’t frequently traveled. Hallways can have around 30 to 40 square feet of unused space, meaning you can easily build a full-sized bathroom with the right design!
