3 Things to Consider Before a Whole-House Remodel

Homeowners have different reasons for launching a whole-house remodeling project. Some of them need to accommodate the needs of a growing family, some want extra space to enjoy their hobbies, while others simply want to expand their living space. In this post, DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Madison, the leading interior remodeling company, shares three things you’ll need to consider before investing in a whole-house remodel.

Inspect for Asbestos & Lead

Chances are you’re remodeling partly because you want to update the home’s style. If your home was built prior to the 1980’s, there is a chance it could contain toxic substances like asbestos and lead paint. It’s vital to get a home inspection before demolition of walls, flooring and roofing. If these materials are found, it will add considerable expense to the remodeling budget that may force you to change the scope of the project.

Consider the Water Heater

With a whole-house remodel, you may find out that you have more space to add bathrooms for your family’s convenience. However, you’ll need to look carefully at your water supply lines and the limit of your water heater. Remember that a smaller tank or one with a long recovery time might end up falling short on meeting your needs.

If you find that your current water heater isn’t adequate, consider having a tankless or tank heater for your second floor, or install a bigger tank with a recirculation pump that keeps the water temperature consistent.

Upgrade Your Electrical Panel

Check your current electrical panel or ask a remodeler to do it for you. If you see that it’s at 100-200 amperes with all slots filled, you’ll need to have it upgraded. Keep in mind that more rooms and an upgraded kitchen will most likely require a panel upgrade. Also, you’ll need to be familiar with your local building codes since they dictate where your panel should be placed. This is also a great chance to check your wiring and have it replaced if needed.
