Factors That Can Affect Your Bathroom Remodeling Timeline

With proper planning, you can keep your bathroom remodeling project on track. However, it’s also important to have realistic expectations about the project timeline. Here are the factors you should consider when setting those expectations.

Scope of the Renovations

The more extensive a bathroom remodel, the longer it’ll take to finish the project. For instance, updating your bathroom tiles and fixtures shouldn’t take too much time because the layout is unchanged. On the other hand, relocating large fixtures such as a bathtub or shower stall will take a lot of time because extensive replumbing and electric rewiring is needed.

Choice of Materials

It’ll take some time for suppliers to ship heavy bathroom countertops, fragile materials and premium, imported tiles. There’s also the issue of how difficult it’ll be to install new tiles and fixtures. It’s a good idea to take into account ease of installation while planning your bathroom remodel. For instance, vinyl flooring can be installed in as little as a day, while tile flooring will take roughly two to three days.

Lack of Supplies

Contractors may find it difficult to source certain materials during the peak season due to high demand. One way of avoiding supply-related delays is to schedule remodeling projects in fall, when demand for contractor services—and the prices for certain bathroom materials—drops.

Underlying Plumbing or Structural Issues

You can never rule out the possibility there may be underlying plumbing or structural issues that will need to be addressed before contractors can start remodeling your bathroom. The good news is that repairs for any underlying issues are unlikely to set the project timeline back, as remodeling contractors always conduct a comprehensive inspection before construction starts. As such, they should have already factored in these repairs when they set the timeline.

Change Orders

Change orders are modifications made to the original scope of the project. While they’re unavoidable in certain situations, it’s best to avoid them. That’s because they almost always cause delays and increase project costs. The best way to avoid change orders is to discuss all of the project details with your contractor during the initial consultation and inform them about your preferences. Remember: bathroom remodeling projects are essentially a collaboration between you and your bathroom contractors
