5 Questions to Ask Before Approving a Remodeling Quote

Asking for remodeling quotes from interior remodeling contractors is part of the budget-planning process. But how can you tell if a remodeling quote is a good one? By going through the details of each quote. Here are the questions you should ask before approving a remodeling quote:

1. Is There a Detailed Breakdown of the Renovation Costs?

Lump sums aren’t good enough and, in some cases, are a potential red flag. There has to be transparency about the different costs of the proposed renovations as well as the scope of work. In particular, the breakdown of tasks and their corresponding deadlines needs to be scrutinized.

The Difference Between Quotes & Estimates

Keep in mind that quotes are different from estimates. They’re sometimes used interchangeably but there’s a key difference between the two. Estimates, as the name suggests, are just educated guesses about the project costs and usually given during a phone call to give you an idea of the estimated project costs. Quotes, on the other hand, are fixed and more detailed than estimates, and would normally be given after an on-site visit.

2. Is There a Detailed Timeline for the Project?

Timelines are vital to keep your renovations on track. Keep in mind that you can never really rule out the possibility of delays, but a detailed timeline can at least help you monitor the progress of your remodeling project.

3. Was a Warranty Mentioned at Any Point?

If not, you can ask your contractor if they offer any warranties. Normally, you shouldn’t have to worry about costly mistakes if you’re working with a trusted interior home remodeling contractor. However, there are certain things, such as extreme weather events, that could complicate renovations.

4. How Are Change Orders Processed?

A change order is a document that details modifications to the scope or cost of the original construction project. It’s best to avoid change orders since they almost always increase the costs of a renovation. However, they are unavoidable in some cases, which is why you should at least have a basic understanding of how your contractor will process change orders.

5. Why Did I Get a Lower Quote From Another Contractor?

It’s normal to see differences in quotes obtained from different contractors. However, you should be wary of exceedingly low quotes. It’s not uncommon for less experienced contractors to offer lower quotes to attract more customers. It might be tempting to approve these quotes, but if you’re planning extensive renovations, it’s best to hire experienced and reputable contractors who can deliver on their guarantees. Remember: if a quote seems too good to be true, it probably is.
