5 Quick Tips on Designing Your Forever Home

The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) says that 87 percent of adults over 65 prefer to stay in their homes as they age. Making your home accessible can be beneficial to not only yourself, but your entire household. It’s more cost-effective to live in a place that evolves with your needs.

Here are tips to help you design and create your forever home from one of the area’s best interior remodeling contractors

Floors Should Be Smooth

Steps are major obstacles for people in a wheelchair or who use a walker. Build a home at grade level or install a ramp to the front door and garage. Consider wood or tile for a smooth floor surface. As much as possible, avoid carpeting because it can make it difficult for those with limited mobility to move around.

Wide Doorways Are a Must

Your front door should be wide enough for someone in a power wheelchair to pass through. Doors inside the house should be at least 36 inches wide. Instead of doorknobs, which can be hard to use for physically challenged individuals, install lever handles. Sliding or pocket doors are also a great option since they open and close easily.

Have At Least One Accessible Bathroom

Walk-in tubs are easiest to access because they eliminate the need to climb over the side. Make sure to include grab bars in all bathing areas. In the tub, have two bars installed on the sidewall at standing and sitting height. The shower should have grab bars on all walls. It is important to have a non-slip floor to prevent falls. Consider a textured tile or a slatted wood tray over a concrete floor for your bathroom remodeling project.

Opt for an Open Closet

Standard bedroom closets can be difficult to use for individuals with disabilities, making an open closet a great option. Go for wider drawers and make sure they aren’t too high or low for wheelchair users. If you are sharing a closet with your partner who is physically challenged, divide the space horizontally.

Have Things Installed Low Except for Outlets

This applies to the windows and drawers. For easy reach, keep dishes, pots and pans in the under-counter drawers. These drawers are easier to pull out than cupboards. Instead of a stationary kitchen island, choose a moveable one.
