Tips for Designing Spaces for a Multigenerational Family

According to a recent study conducted by Pew Research, approximately 64 million Americans live in a multigenerational home. This isn’t surprising given the fact that housing and healthcare costs have been steadily increasing. While trying to squeeze in three generations under a single roof may not seem like an ideal situation, there are actually a lot of perks associated with multigenerational living, including shared expenses, stronger relationships and increased safety.

The trick is to design a home that makes sense. So before calling your local contractor for a home remodel estimate, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Living in Harmony

Make Use of Every Nook & Cranny

With many people living in the same home, space can be at a premium so be sure to make use of every square inch available. Luckily, there are a lot of creative storage solutions readily available. You could also consider converting some areas of your home, like the attic, garage or basement, into extra living spaces.

Locate Bedrooms Carefully

As some seniors age, they will have a harder time accessing the upper levels of a house. This is why accessible remodeling contractors recommend locating older family members in bedrooms on the main level. While it may seem normal to place all bedrooms on the second floor, it isn’t the safest or most practical option.

Consider an Ensuite Bathroom

Another big problem multigenerational living poses is sharing bathrooms. This can be a major point of contention, especially if there are several family members going to school or work at the same time. If you design a couple of rooms from scratch when renovating, consider bedrooms with en suite bathrooms for parents and grandparents.

Offer Separate Entrances

Another way to address privacy concerns is to offer separate entrances. Some family members may need to leave early while others may arrive home late at night. Think about how everyone will enter your home and plan accordingly. This will reduce traffic and chaos throughout the day and make each family member feel more independent.
