Give Your Kitchen a 1950s Makeover

The 1950s evoke a lot of images, such as jukeboxes, poodle skirts, and the greaser look. Since this era is so noteworthy in American history, why not incorporate a 1950s kitchen makeover? Take this part of your room back in time to an iconic period.

Stylish 1950s Kitchen Makeover Ideas

Use Bright Colors: Neutral colors are the safe and popular choice. However, bright colors were the norm in a 1950s kitchen. Such colors as bright yellow and lime green for the cabinets or backsplash were a mainstay.

Incorporate a Lot of Steel: Not everyone likes steel appliances because this gives the room an industrial look. Steel, though, was commonplace in kitchen fixtures during that time, due to the thriving steel industry. Consider brightly colored steel appliances.

Add Linoleum Flooring: Manufacturers began introducing linoleum to residential homes in the 1950s. By the 1960s, sheet vinyl took over in popularity, though linoleum is starting to make a comeback.

Pair With Laminate Countertops: Linoleum pairs nicely with laminate sheets for a countertop surface. The surface is easy to clean and also available in an assortment of colors. Countertops of this era also had a metal banding around the edges.

Make the Kitchen Ergonomic: Kitchens in those days were smaller than they are today. For this reason, contractors designed space-saving kitchens. Some ideas here include a small breakfast nook, roll-out garbage cans, and built-in diner-style barstools. If space allows, consider a small dining table in place of where you would place an island in a modern kitchen.
