The Dos & Don’ts of Bathroom Lighting

Bathrooms are often challenging to illuminate. Ideally, you want to incorporate warm, natural light to make the space look inviting. At the same time, maintaining functionality and privacy means you cannot install typical windows. To help you properly light your bathroom space, bathroom contractor DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Huntsville reveals some do’s and don’ts of bathroom lighting here.

Do’s

  • Do flank the bathroom mirror with lights. When looking in a bathroom mirror, you want direct lighting that minimizes shadows so you can see yourself clearly. With that in mind, install lighting around a mirror for an uninterrupted and fully illuminated view.
  • Do put your light on dimmers. If you are looking for versatility in your lighting, dimmers can make your bathroom space more practical and inviting. When combined with energy-efficient lighting, dimmers also reduce your power consumption in the bathroom.
  • Do consider all elements in the bathroom before installing a chandelier. While chandeliers can add elegance and opulence to a space, they can be challenging to install and maintain. Often, chandeliers must be UL-rated for moisture and protected with a ground-fault circuit interrupter to limit the adverse effects of shocks. If your bathroom does not have a tall ceiling, an expert bathroom remodeler might suggest installing ornamental candle fixtures instead of chandeliers.

Don’ts

  • Do not add a light above the bathroom mirror. An overhead light placed directly above a mirror can cast deep shadows below your eyes, nose and chin. This type of lighting is not only ineffective for activities like shaving and applying makeup, it can also make you look older! Another mistake to watch out for is asymmetrical lighting. Adding a light fixture to only one side of the bathroom mirror will produce uneven illumination and make grooming strenuous. Lastly, swap out clear bulbs, which cast shadows like overhead lights, for opaque or frosted bulbs.
  • Do not ignore the bulbs you use. Apart from having an impact on your energy consumption, different bulbs render color in different ways. LEDs, which consume less electricity, give off crisp, clear light and are easily dimmable, making them more versatile than other options. LEDs also work well with low-voltage recessed lighting.
