5 Best Countertop Materials for Traditional Kitchens

The countertop is an integral part of today’s kitchen. If you have selected a traditional kitchen design, there are certain materials that are suitable for traditional aesthetics without compromising functionality. In today’s post, the kitchen remodelers at DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Hollywood take a look at the best countertop materials for traditional kitchens.

1. Soapstone

Stone is the oldest material to be used as a work surface. Among the oldest in use is soapstone, a material so named because it feels like you’re holding a bar of soap in your hand. Soapstone is favored as a work surface because it’s easy to cut into shape, is extremely durable and does not interact with chemicals and acids. Soapstone countertops are typically matte, but can be polished to a shine.

2. Slate

While more widely known as a roofing material, there are certain types of slate that can be used for kitchen countertops. Slate is dense, nonporous and stain- and acid-resistant. Unlike other types of stone, slate does not require a sealer. Slate for countertops comes in a wide variety of colors, from neutral colors like light gray and charcoal, to shades of green and even primary colors like blue and red.

3. Marble

Some traditional kitchens still have marble countertops because it simply looks beautiful, thanks to its natural veining. However, marble is a porous material. It can be scratched and stained, and requires resealing periodically. Natural marble is ideally used for backsplashes or surfaces not used for food preparation, such as pantry counters. If you want the aesthetics of marble for your kitchen renovation without the maintenance requirements, consider man-made cultured marble.

4. Granite

Granite remains one of the most popular kitchen countertop materials, thanks to its versatility. In addition to a wide selection of colors, granite offers a wide variety of patterns, with additional variations achieved depending on how it’s cut. Unlike slate, granite is not nonporous and must be regularly sealed.

5. Wood

Wood may have high maintenance requirements, but many homeowners prefer the rustic warmth of wood countertops. Traditional “butcher block” countertops are made of strips of hard maple or oak, cut in a specific way so that the woodgrain contributes to stability and prevents warping. Wood countertops are vulnerable to damage caused by heat, moisture and acids.
